Summary

Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 698

How does the pro-blame bias influence our thinking and judgment?

Cory Clark, Behavioral Scientist, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 698, to unpack why we shouldn't fully trust science, how victim mentality creates a dysfunctional dynamic, the dangers of social media-fueled tribalism, and how self-awareness, courage, and meaningful conflict can transform the way we create an honest connection with others in today’s world.

"When you have people who identify strongly with a political in-group on the left or right, they start to become very afraid of contradicting beliefs that are strongly held by their in-group based on the fear of being ostracized. Our brains evolved to be averse, trying to avoid anything that could get us ostracized from our social group. So we're giving so much power to the extremists within our own group when most of the time, they're not the people to be listening to." - Cory Clark

We can't speak our minds. We can't just be honest with our friends and our family and our peers about what we think is true about the world. And I think everyone's sick of it. One thing I see in my data is that so many people are self-censoring their own beliefs. And I think it is based on this sort of unwarranted fear of what might happen to you if you were to be honest and speak what you truly think openly around people who might disagree with you. Dr. Corey Jane Clark is a behavioral scientist who has been featured by the BBC and New York Times.

We've lost the art of navigating conflict.

0:28.6

We've lost the art of hearing someone else's perspective.

Is there a beginning to unravel the solution for this bifurcation and war

0:36.6

among people that are offended and people that just want to live their lives in power.

When you have people who identify strongly with a political in-group on the left or right, they start to become very afraid of contradicting beliefs that are strongly held by their in-group.

0:53.8

One thing that's really central to human psychology

0:56.1

is a strong fear of being ostracized. Our brains evolved to be really averse, trying to avoid

1:05.9

saying anything or behaving in any way that potentially could get us ostracized from our social

1:10.3

group. And so we're giving so much power to the extremists within our own group when they're

1:15.1

probably most of the time not the people to be listening to.

1:18.4

What are the forces behind this narrative of victimization? And how are people

1:22.6

unknowingly weaponized by it and then consequently monetized to buy the things that'll make them feel

1:28.7

better because of that narrative in the first place.

1:31.6

I assume that.

Corey Clark, welcome to the podcast. I'm here to talk

2:01.9

with you about so many important things, but the one that comes top of heart, top of mind,

2:06.8

is this psychology of victim mentality with your work in behavioral science and something I find

2:13.0

utterly fascinating. You actually help professors and scholars get along, which we'll talk about.

2:18.6

Give people a high level view. Don't go into all the specifics of what you do, but just in the

2:23.1

construct of our conversation, just share people a little bit about your work and why it is you
