Now most weeks I start by telling you the most recent rates of infection and deaths from COVID-19 in the US.

Today we're looking at different numbers,

ones that have less to do with the health of your body than the health of your wallet.

At the height of this pandemic, more than 23 million people were unemployed in the United States.

That's almost 15% of the workforce.

Our economy shrank by more than $2 trillion in just a few months.

Thanks to a lot of stimulus money, we're doing a bit better right now.

As of March, there were fewer than 10 million unemployed people in the US,

but that's still 4 million more than before the pandemic.

And the economy seems to be improving.
