And last time we had Dr. Celine Gounder on the show in July of last year,

3 million people in the US had been infected with COVID-19,

with nearly 130,000 deaths.

Now, roughly 24 million of us have been infected,

and that number is increasing by a quarter million people every day,

and almost 400,000 people have died,

with the death rate reaching as high as 4,000 a day in the past few weeks.

Now, amid these grim statistics, two vaccines are rolling out across the United States,

but slower than promised, and much more slowly than most of us would like.
