Coronation Fashion, past and present. One of the most anticipated and ceremonially significant parts of the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla was what the royals would wear, from real fur to faux

tiaras and some surprising and creative robe choices. The royal family were all dressed to impress.

Now that the ensembles they selected have been splashed on screens across the world,

let's take a look at the history of English and British coronation fashion and see how the

2023 Westminster Abbey looks stacked up. The importance of color.

For hundreds of years, color has played a symbolic role in royal clothing.

Five shades in particular, crimson, purple, royal blue, white and gold have long been associated with coronations.

Crimson, a shade of deep red bordering on purple,

was created in the ancient Mediterranean, using dry Kerms insects. The labor-intensive process

made for very expensive dyes, so crimson fabric was only available to the wealthy. Crimson also has significance in the Christian religion.

It is associated with the blood of Christ, holy martyrs, and the presence of God.
