To be human is to experience pain and suffering.

The betrayal of a friend, the loss of a loved one, the hurtful

words of a hot-tempered co-worker, the apathy of a spouse. No, the consequences of

sin and brokenness can take various forms.

Our sin hurts ourselves and others.

And even when we're not personally guilty of something,

the world we live in is broken by sin.

It's tempting to respond to the reality of sin by either detaching from the world around. by

it's tempting to respond to the reality of sin by either detaching from the world around us or by indulging in it.

Advocates of detachment encourage folks not to get too close to people or things in this life.

Some suggest that by developing rigorous too close to people or things in this life.

Some suggest that by developing rigorous disciplines,

mental, physical, or spiritual, we can remain unaffected

by pain and by pleasure.

On the other hand, others tell us to fully indulge ourselves.

Back in Paul's day the message of indulgence was Let's Eat and Drink for tomorrow we die.

In other words, live for today, maximize pleasure, don't think about pain.

Today, the same message takes the form of what's

falsely named sexual liberation. It can be seen in the normalization of things like

pornography and divorce and homosexuality and gender identities.
