Good morning from the Financial Times. Today is Monday, November 1st, and this is your FT news briefing.

0:08.8

The Massive UN Conference on Climate Change is underway in Glasgow, and our Environment Reporter

0:13.4

Leslie Hook gives us a preview. And then we've got highlights of a debate between two of our

0:17.9

leading commentators, Rob Armstrong and Jillian Ted, go head-to-head over whether socially responsible

0:23.5

investing can change the world. I'm Mark Filipino, and here's the news you need to start your day.

0:30.0

Glasgow, Scotland is the center of our warming world right now, and it will be for the next week or so.

0:40.4

The city is hosting the annual United Nations Conference on Climate Change, or COP26.

0:46.2

World leaders like US President Joe Biden will be there, along with climate celebrities like Greta

0:51.0

Tunberg. The FT's team of journalists covering COP26 includes our Environment Reporter Leslie Hook.

0:57.5

She joins me now. Hi Leslie. Hi Mark. So Leslie, how big is this? How many people,

1:03.3

size of the venue, and what is it supposed to accomplish? Well, this is the biggest climate summit

1:08.9

since the 2015 Paris Accord. There's expected to be around 25,000 people and 120 heads of state.

1:16.7

1:24.3

summit is to finalize the rules of the Paris Climate Accord. So six years ago in Paris,

1:30.8

countries came together and all agreed to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius,

1:36.0

ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius. But they actually left a lot of the fine print to be figured out later.

1:42.1

And that later is right now. So there's a lot of nitty-gritty questions like how do you report your

1:48.5

emissions of your country? Like what form do you use? Who audits that report of your emissions?

1:54.8

Another topic is how can countries exchange carbon offsets, trade carbon offsets, buy-and-sell carbon

2:01.8

offsets between each other? What's the framework governing that global carbon market? So we've got

2:07.8

some really thorny details to be worked out in Glasgow. That's kind of the fine print of the summit.

2:14.3

So this feels like a kind of a major milestone for the Paris Agreement, right?
