This July 4th, there was a rise of anti-American sentiment, even within churches who are considered mainstream. It begs the question, is it more pious to refuse to celebrate July 4th—or even to criticize the country—because of love for the kingdom of God? Does America’s sin of slavery make the principles of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s founding illegitimate? Is it racially insensitive to celebrate July 4th, as many Christian leaders are starting to insinuate? Today, we answer these questions, and ask those who disagree: what is the benefit of tearing down our founding principles?
