Summary

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up... it's podcast time! This week the HDYR gang is separating fact from fiction with their look back at Disney's kinda/sorta/not really "true story" of the first Jamaican bobsled team. Once you get past the fact that 95% of this was made up, however, there's still plenty to love about this movie.

Topics include: the shift from straightforward sports drama to broad comedy, why the real story of this team doesn't make for a particularly compelling film, our pitch for a revised version of this sport, whether or not Derice is an effective protagonist, a shocking fact about one of the writers that might explain a few or our issues with the script, and much much more!

Hello and welcome Hey, do you remember, Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

Yeah. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting Cool Runnings. The poster for the 1993 Walt Disney film Cool Runnings features the tagline,

0:58.2

a comedy inspired by the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team.

1:03.0

Presumably because the phrase inspired by was a tactful way of admitting that they made most of this up.

1:08.8

Yes, there was a Jamaican bobsled team at the 1988

1:11.6

Winter Olympics, and yes, they crashed during their final run. That's pretty much where the

1:16.9

similarities end. These characters, their backstories, and their struggle as outsiders at this event

1:22.7

are entirely fictional. But you can forgive Disney for not being particularly interested in making a

1:28.3

movie about a team that was universally accepted by their competitors, never came close to

1:33.3

winning any medals, and crashed not because of mechanical error, but because of their inexperience.

1:38.7

No, they were only concerned with the absurdity of the premise. And yet, the tone of the film

1:43.0

wasn't always so broad. It was originally

1:45.2

intended to be a more straightforward drama. In fact, some of the key cast members signed on

1:50.1

with that understanding. But after cycling through a couple of writers and directors and then being put

1:54.9

into turnaround, the project was eventually re-envisioned as a comedy. And while that may have rubbed

1:59.9

some of the real-life participants

2:01.3

the wrong way, it's hard to argue with the film's success. At the time of its release, Cool Runnings
