Summary

Liv speaks with Dr. Ryan Denson about the mythology of the sea (again!), this time about the Nereid nymphs, daughters of the Old Man of the Sea, and Triton(s), the son(s) of Poseidon (sometimes there's one, sometimes many... such is Greek myth). CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.

to go deep into a world of drugs or darkness. And then there were these hints of a much bigger

Hi, hello. Nice to have you here. This is Let's Talk About Myths Baby. And I am live. That

1:38.0

woman who is obsessed with the sea and everything within its depths. Even if such obsession

1:43.8

only comes out in very specific circumstances like conversations with this particular

1:49.3

guest. Last year, newly Dr. Ryan Denson joined me to talk about the sea monsters of Greek

1:55.5

mythology. And yes, I turned it into a lengthy conversation about whales and sharks and

1:59.9

what implications those creatures have on ancient Greece and its mythology because, frankly,

2:04.2

I could talk about sharks forever. And I live on an island in the Pacific Northwest that

2:08.2

is deeply and completely obsessed with whales. So niche is colliding here. And today, Ryan

2:14.0

is back to talk about some of the deities of the sea within Greek myth, particularly

2:19.3

Triton or sometimes Plural Tritons and the Nariads, those names of the sea daughters of Narius.

Just a quick note though, we did have some fascinating and wild tech difficulties when

2:31.4

we first tried to record this, which meant that the recording basically just kept cutting

2:35.1

out at three minutes. We gave up after like 10. So it's smooth after the first bits,

2:40.5

but I didn't want to lose everything that we were chatting about during those issues.
