raised up judges, who delivered them from the hands of those who had plundered them.

The book of judges can be stated as God's battle against humanism. God's battle against humanism or man-centered religion because when you worship an idol, you seek to worship a God, you control, rather than the one who controls you.

Judges were civil leaders, civil magistrates.

They were societal leaders.

They didn't reach the status of kings,

but they were the leaders that God had established

for this express purpose of delivering God's people

from the conditions that had developed because of their

departure from him. The cycle that you will see throughout the book of judges can be understood

in three words. The cycle would be there would be disobedience. The people would rebel against God.
