Al placed the heavy bag on the ground and straightened with a sigh.

Here we are, she said, meeting Stucky's gaze.

The dog looked up at her with a big, goofy grin.

Elle gave him a sad smile and then took in the cottage again.

It was smaller than she remembered.

For some reason, these days, she always thought of the place as big and daunting.

It hadn't felt that way when she grew up here. It only became unsafe much later.

I bet you still like it here, right? She said to Stucky, and he grinned back at her.

El tilted her head, or not.

She had expected him to run straight to the door, happy and excited to be home.

Instead, he stayed close to her.
