Conflict of interest is dividing doctors.

On the one hand, concerned campaigners argue that hidden influences are altering the treatments

they use and undermining confidence in the profession, public health services,

and the expert committees that advise them.

The problem in medicine is that conflicts of interest have got out of control

and people who are heavily conflicted are presenting themselves as independent.

We have a crisis in fact in medicine and that crisis is a crisis of public trust

because conflicts of interest have been allowed to get so out of control.

While at the other extreme, some believe the problem's been overblown and that countermeasures

are stifling innovation and harming patient care. The conflict of interest concern has gone way

far. The pendulum has swung to way overblown and the pendulum stuck.
