You're going to Some thousands of years ago on a sunny and arid day a group of people sat in the bottom of a desert valley surrounded by fortress hills on either side mountains really they sat and waited

The riveting exhortation of their leader, an old man at this point still

hung over them, stirring and yet tinged with grief. Go and be what your God has called you

to be. Go and be a glory. Though advanced in years

their leader had grown neither tired nor frail. He had led them through war and

through deserts, across great lands and greater perils, in bondage and fear and trial and storm, plague, war, triumph, loss, and hope,

he had led them, and they loved him for it, for all that he had done.

In spite of his stirring words, the mood was somber, even melancholy.

And not just because of the weightiness of his charge, but also because of what it meant, of what they knew it meant.

They knew what it meant, him standing there before the whole people, recalling the woes and

triumphs of more than 40 years together, charging them to keep every law that had been laid before them.

It could only mean one thing.

He was leaving.

And so it was, after one final blessing for each tribe, Moses left God's people in the plains of

Moab and ascended to the top of Pizga, across the valley from the pagan Jericho.

The man of God had finished his work. He had run his race and he would go now into his rest.

But not before one final earthly gift from the voice that had spoken to him from the burning bush.

One final gift from Yahweh.

See, years before in the heat of frustration and anger, Moses had disobeyed his God.

He had abused his power in unrighteous anger.

For that the Lord forbade him from entering the promised land.
