heard in the news that on July 8th, Rogers, which is one of the major telecom networks in Canada,

went down for basically the whole day. And as a result of that, people not only lost their

home phone service, their cable, their internet, but our debit payment system went

down across the country. 9-1-1, which is the emergency number, was not accessible for many

Rogers customers, and there were many other consequences that came of that outage.

It really put a spotlight on how concentrated the Canadian telecom sector is, and how these companies do not

often serve the public interest, and that the government has neglected its role as a regulator
