together in community. As some of you may know, I experienced a number of adverse childhood experiences, also

commonly referred to as ACEs.

When people learn this about me, they're surprised, especially if they know about the negative

outcome statistics associated with ACEs.

In my journey of learning about adverse childhood experiences, it became crystal clear that community,

specifically trusted adults, was a major reason why I thrived as I moved into adulthood.

What I find striking, too, is that there wasn't formal intervention of any kind by these

trusted adults, though, of course, community agencies offer incredible support

services for families. In my case, the people who ended up saving me, educators largely, didn't know

exactly what was going on for me, but I suspect could see that I needed support. These people found

ways to bolster my confidence and help me not label myself as dumb when I was struggling in school, and I struggled a lot in school.

And they also encouraged my development in the thing I found joy in, which at that time was music.
