There are certain names that start to pop up over and over again. Perhaps you've noticed

names like Galen, Empedocles, Athanasius Kircher, and, say it with me now, fucking Aristotle.

But what about Georges-Louis Leclerc, the comp de Bofone? Where's his parade?

Where's his t-shirt? Bufone has come up in this show at least six separate times,

but I fear he's never made quite the impression he deserves. He was the first guy to take a daring stab at dating

the age of the Earth. He figured that the planet had started out as a molten rock, good, and that

it had then cooled at a steady rate, bad. So he heated a cannonball, spun it around, measured

how long it took to cool to normal earth temperature, and extrapolated

from there. Pretty flawed all the way around, and even Baffon seemed disappointed in his results.
