There they were remembering their covenants of God from Passover.

When God led the people out of Egypt in Exodus readings that we're doing right now,

that's what Jesus and his disciples are remembering.

And they were eating the meal when Jesus says to them,

this is my body broken for you.

And the bread that he is holding is an established part of the Passover meal.

In Passover, if you have not experienced it, there's a number of different pieces of unleavened bread,

and some of them are broken, and some of them are hidden, and there's a lot of ritual with bread.

So, of course, Jesus and his disciples are in the upper room doing their Passover,

and he's holding one of the pieces of bread because this is what you do in Passover. And he says to

them, this is my body broken for you. He himself is tying the death of his body back to what
