As a director of human resources for a company with many U.S. locations, I am daily bombarded with labels about the employees that work at these various branches.

Negative labels like department slacker, no-show, inexperienced, overachiever, underachiever, and those are just a few.

My study of Christian science helps enormously to discard these easily accepted suggestions

and better support the organization's employees.

To do so, I often rely on a sentence from a rule for motives and acts found in the manual of the Mother Church by Mary Bakeretti.

The members of this church should daily watch and pray

to be delivered from all evil, from prophesy,

judging, condemning, counseling, influencing, or being influenced erroneously.

I was interested in the things we should be delivered from and began to consider them in relation to our employees.

You know, keeping above the fray is important as I counter the definitions of prophesying,

outlining a specific outcome, judging, giving a verdict without knowing the facts, condemning, quick to go along with the criticism

that accompanies it, counseling, enlisting to help others often without being asked.

The last admonition, influencing or being influenced erroneously, was particularly challenging

because employees are so quick to share their opinions. I began to rely on principle, a Bible-based

synonym for God. It reminds me that there is one law governing the universe,

including me and all my coworkers, that there can be about one spiritual identity for each one of us,

the God created one.

I now contemplate this in my everyday work and identify our employees, including myself,

as individual spiritual ideas expressing God in various ways.
