Summary

In this episode, we welcome Colton Kyle to the show. He is the son of the legendary Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and the current CEO of the American Sniper brand. In this interview, we discuss what it was like growing up in the Kyle family, some of the earliest memories he has with his father, the day his father was murdered and how he found out, the immediate aftermath, how he dealt with growing into young manhood without having his father to model manhood for him, the men that were involved in helping form him after his father was murdered, whether or not he and his family agree with the sentence that his father's murderer received, if he has forgiven his father's killer, if he would accept an invitation to meet face-to-face with his father's killer and what he would say to him, how his faith has grown and been shaped by the fire he has had to endure, how his family has dealt with the accusations that his father embellished his military record, what he is doing to continue his father's legacy, and much more. 0:54.3

All right guys, we've got a special guest on the podcast today.

0:55.4

His name is Colton Kyle.

1:11.5

So he is the son of the late Navy SEAL sniper, Chris Kyle. And so, guys, we've talked about Chris on the show before. Many of you've heard about him because of his book, American sniper, and then the movie with Bradley Cooper that was directed by Clint Eastwood. But now we're talking to his son who was eight years old on the morning that he was murdered by another veteran that he was trying to assist. And so in this

1:17.1

interview today, obviously we've had Taya on several times. That is Chris's widow and also

1:23.1

Colton's mother. And she was very adamant about getting him on the show to hear his perspective. I was like, yeah, absolutely. We're going to make that happen. But we just talk about, you know, what it was like growing up in the Kyle family having Teas mom and Chris's dad and got some insight into the memories that he was able to forge from those times. And also just talking about how memory can be a little bit of a funny thing, you know, and you're looking back at things in childhood, and you think it happened one way, and then you talk to another family member, and they're like, no, it's actually happened like this. And then we go back to that morning. We go back to the day that his father was murdered, what that was like when he found out about the murder, how he was able to react to that. Again, being eight years old, how was he able to grieve while at the same time he's growing older? And then he's becoming a young man and into manhood and what it's like being raised by just your mom. And then you're also an older brother. And you have this desire and longing for your father. And, you know, who's going to be that male role model or that group of male role models in your life.

2:17.7

And so I just loved how he really got into all the detail there. And then also we talked about the man

2:22.4

that murdered his father. We talked about whether or not he agrees with the sentence that that man was

2:26.6

given. If he was able to get a sit down conversation with him, would he take it? And if so,

2:32.4

would he say? Has he forgiven this man?

2:35.5

And then also through point of this entire conversation, even though we didn't really just,

2:39.5

you know, hit it explicitly is Colton's faith. Obviously, Taya and Chris were people of faith.

2:45.0

They raised up Colton and his sister McKenna to be Christians and to be people of faith.

2:50.0

But it's his Christian faith that is really undergirding in the scaffolding for most of the things that he believes today. And so we talk about all that. We talk about what he's doing now with the American sniper brand. We talk about what the family thought about the American sniper movie. We also got into, hey, there's a lot of rumors that have come out now that, you know, Chris Kyle's this prominent military figure. A lot of people claiming that he didn't do the things that he said he did. And a lot of people thinking that a lot of rumors that have come out now that, you know, Chris Kyle's this prominent military figure.

3:07.8

A lot of people claiming that he didn't do the things that he said he did. And a lot of people thinking that a lot of things from his military career has been fabricated. And so how the family deals with that. And again, guys, it was just a tremendous pleasure to talk to him. This man is wise beyond his years. And I was thrilled to have him on the show. so without further ado, let's get into it.
