Summary

We discuss whether we learned anything new about Aryna Sabalenka and Alexander Zverev after their victories in Ostrava(!!!) and Cologne(2), the possible reasons why Sabalenka hasn’t translated tour success to the Grand Slams, how high the ceiling could be for Antwerp champion Ugo Humbert, and, after David’s discussion on Twitter with Denis Shapovalov, whether tennis is better off with or without Hawkeye. Should entertainment be the number one priority? Could there be a compromise by reducing the number of challenges per match? And how have Andy Roddick’s views on the topic evolved since his playing days?

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

0:13.0

Hello and thank you to Lindsay Maxwell there that you heard in our intro. She's in Philadelphia or the streets of Philadelphia as Matt replied when I asked him to remind me where Lindsay was from.

0:37.0

A little, little Bruce reference. So thank you Lindsay. Hello Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania isn't it swing state.

And don't adjust the device that you're listening to when you hear us start to talk about Alexander's very over winning a title in Cologne. Yes, it is the exact same chat that we had this time last week.

1:10.0

Because tennis has reached new levels of weird and we will be having that same conversation again at some stage today just to warn you.

1:20.0

Things are weird aren't they David? Yeah, they are. They are. And if they're not duplicating themselves, they're adding exclamation marks after themselves and having dogs and bands and yeah, basically what we had last week really.

1:38.0

Don't lump the exclamation marks in with the dogs and the bands David. It also looks like the exact same trophy in Cologne too.

1:46.0

Honestly, it's like a spot the difference photo between Cologne one and Cologne two is very of holding the exact same trophy.

1:53.0

Hey, Sasha, you know that trophy we gave you last week. Where did you put that? Bring it with you to the final.

2:00.0

Is it is it at hand? We'll be needing that. So yeah, those are things that have happened this week. Cologne again, is very of again.

2:11.0

I'll come on to talk about that, but I think we should probably start off by talking about a Strava. And I feel like I have to shout it because of all the exclamation marks.

2:20.0

I need to tell them my efforts. It's really it's it's it's really affected my viewership of a Strava this week. The volume of exclamation marks because I feel like somebody shouting at me when I watch the screen, which is not necessarily what I want.

2:36.0

Arena, Sabel Enker won the title. She did the singles doubles double. She also won the doubles title alongside partner.

2:44.0

Elise Merton's there at great doubles partnership. She beat Victoria as a renker in the final fairly one sided final for for a number of reasons, which we will come on to talk about.

2:56.0

She was six love for love down David in the quarter finals.

3:02.0

Sabel Enker to Sarah Suribez Tormo. Six love for love.

3:08.0

I mean, I know this can happen with Arena Sabel Enker, but I mean, she does she she she is just who she is isn't she she does revert to type incredibly.

3:22.0

Absolutely extreme of that all or nothing type of player.

3:27.0

I mean, she's a predictions nightmare and I've got a few of those, but I mean, she's the worst of the lot in a way because you can't put your house on what you're going to get.

3:37.0

You just from her performance wise, there are some players that will produce a certain level. Most weeks, she is just not like that.
