live from College Green once more at the heart of the Westminster Wobble.

It was size of relief all round last night in Westminster as Theresa May

just about managed to convince herself and her acolytes in government that she was still in

office, albeit not in power. The Prime Minister managed to scrape a Pyrrhic victory in the

secret, no confidence ballot, with 200 votes to 117, but of course 162 of those votes were

from Tories on the government payroll. We'll be talking to people who voted for her, people who voted against her, and of course people from all parts of the political scene who are not really quite sure what happens next. In order to secure the victory she had to promise to listen to her enemies and promise not to lead the party into the next general election. One week after I called for Theresa May to resign, she might as well have done that.

That is the only way to change what is now a certain defeat, surely in Europe and in the

Commons in January. Today, Theresa May is heading off on another pointless mission to the European

Union, where she will attempt to, in her words, get legal assurances about the Irish backstock.

She's not going to get them, they're not going to give them to her. It's all a further colossal embarrassment, isn't it? This will be the last Christmas, Theresa May, in Downey Street.
