Good morning. I'm Kate Baldwin. It's Tuesday, April 28. Here are the five things you need to know to start your day.

Number one, the court appearance. Cole Thomas Allen is now charged with trying to assassinate the president.

He's a suspect in the attack on the White House Correspondents Dinner. He's not only facing that new charge, he could still face more as the investigation is far from over.

In his first court appearance Monday, Allen showed little emotion. Answering only yes or no to the

judge, he did ask the judge to appoint him a public defender. Charging documents show that he also

invoked his right to remain silent after his arrest. But CNN is also learning more from an

analysis of his social media posts

than nearly 5,000 posts on X and Blue Sky. Accounts linked to Allen shift from focusing largely on

video games in 2022 to then political rage in the last couple of years. Those posts compared

Trump to Hitler and shared conspiracies that the first assassination

attempt on the president was staged. As for the shots fired Saturday night, the FBI is processing

the shell casing still. The acting attorney general says law enforcement fired five times at Allen as he blew past security,

but it's still not clear whose ammunition

actually hit the Secret Service agent in the vest.
