Summary

A cold weather curveball sparked a heated debate between Yankees and Mets fans, and the fallout goes beyond just game time decisions. Evan and Tiki unpack whether the Mets made the right call moving their game earlier, or if the Yankees sticking to their schedule ultimately proved smarter for fans and turnout. They explore the real story behind attendance numbers, including the gap between tickets sold and fans who actually show up, and why last minute schedule changes can backfire. The discussion also dives into fan behavior, free ticket usage, and how both teams handled the situation, leading to a bigger conversation about what truly serves the fan experience.

The Yankees and Mets both made big decisions in the last 48 hours. The Mets decided to move up their start times due to the cold weather. And I mentioned this after they announced it on Tuesday yesterday, that it was like a PR battle. Like who's going to win the PR battle between the Mets saying, hey, we care about our fans. And the Yankees saying, we care about our fans and we're keeping the game at 7 o'clock. And I always say it's about the individual. There are going to be people, Yankee fans or Mets fans, if you take your fandom aside, who say, I love the 4 o'clock. Oh, it's great. My kids are off from school. I can get home earlier. Oh, that's fantastic. And then there's going to be people who say, this sucks. I can't go to the game. I work. Like, it's different for everybody.

So I'm a big believer in results. I'm a big believer in, let's just see the results.

0:44.5

The data will tell you. Exactly. So it isn't firm data. It's called the I test. The Yankees

0:50.7

sold about 39,000 tickets, which is great for a weeknight against the A's.

0:56.1

The Mets sold about 35,000 tickets, which is also great for a Tuesday night against the Diamondbacks.

1:02.2

Obviously, those tickets were sold probably long before we knew it was going to be 38 degrees.

1:07.8

So the Yankees being about 5,000 seats ahead is pretty much on track. The Yankees do draw

1:12.4

better than the Mets. They've drawn better than the Mets every year since I think 1991. I did a whole data study on that. And I don't think any Mets fan would argue that. The Yankees draw better than the Mets. Like period, stop. End of discussion. Congratulations. I watched the Mets game in its entirety. I watched the Yankee

1:27.2

game in its entirety. I believe the Yankee game in its entirety.

1:28.6

I believe, based on my eye test, that the Yankees had more people show up.

1:34.5

That to me is the definitive who made the right decision game.

1:39.6

Yes.

1:40.0

Now, did the Mets do right by their fans, even if, according to Craig, they're legally forced

1:45.0

to give you vouchers? Yeah, they gave you a chance to come back. That's wonderful. So the Mets fan who couldn't go can still walk away and say, hey, I'm good, I'll come back to a future game. But in terms of who it was better for, it was probably based on the results on the I-Tess, the Yankee fans. And you don't get to follow downstream when those MET fans come back to a future game.

2:05.6

Right.

2:05.9

It doesn't count.

2:07.0

And by the way, a lot of people may never use them.

2:08.5

Yeah.

2:09.1

Yeah, we saw this.

2:09.9

They had free tickets just last night or yesterday afternoon.

2:12.6

They didn't use them.

2:13.3

What teams used to do, they don't do this anymore.
