Summary
A live interview with an NFL Super Bowl quarterback (aka, the "SmartHER Dad"), my dad, Bob Lee! Stories from a time when the players earned $10 a day ... and sometimes got dressed in college classrooms (yes, at Harvard).
Plus ~ What is it like to play in a Super Bowl? What should we consider about young kids playing tackle football?
This interview was filmed LIVE with our insiders - here's how to become one!
------------------------------------------
We have navigated another really busy news week, with many heavy topics. One of the reasons I love the Super Bowl? It provides the opportunity for the nation to pause ... and share an experience that reminds us of something familiar. On the field, we see grit, fierce competition, camaraderie, triumph and tenacity — all a reflection of the American spirit. And when you think about it, the Super Bowl reflects a truly unique American success story: the National Football League exists HERE and only here.
The other reason I love the Super Bowl? It reminds me of my family. Growing up in San Francisco, we all looked forward to Sunday afternoons during football season because we had a personal connection to the game (and immediate access to an excellent commentator and analyst!). My father, Bob Lee, played in the NFL and participated in 3 Super Bowls — with the Vikings and the Rams (he also played for the Falcons). My brothers and I never experienced this part of his life with him, but we got to hear all the many incredible stories he has shared (and continues to)!
So ... cue the SmartHER Father!

| 0:00.0 | Well, hello everybody. Welcome to a special Saturday edition of Scoop. |
| 0:13.3 | Scoop is our regular broadcast that we do on Mondays for our insiders where you get the |
| 0:18.0 | scoop on the week ahead. It's a great way to get a foundation for the week of news. So then hopefully you can hear it and then leave it in the rearview mirror and focus on what you have to do in your life. I mean, that's really the goal of smarter news, is that we want to give you quick and concise, nonpartisan information because news is the story that we share together. You know, we could be in totally different states. As I see, many of you talking on the live chat already are insiders that are already on, Jeremy and Lola and Leslie and Amy. It's great to see all of you. You know, you're in totally different parts of the world. And yet we're sharing a particular time and place together. And that's why the news really matters. And that's why you should be able to access quick and concise and information at your fingertips. So then you can turn and focus on your story, whatever that is. And when you can't get the news easy enough, then you're wasting all this time, looking through the headlines, wondering what's going on. And that's the problem that we're trying to solve for you here at Smarter News. So thank you for your support. We often don't gather on the weekends, but I'm really |
| 1:14.6 | excited for this. I do have a cup of coffee. Hope you have something cozy wherever you are. No judgment, |
| 1:19.6 | whatever it is, whatever time of day it is that you're watching or viewing for those live. I see it's |
| 1:26.2 | a rainy day in a couple of places in the |
| 1:28.1 | country, which is okay because that means hopefully, Jeremy, you're cozy in Oklahoma. And we |
| 1:34.3 | appreciate seeing you here live for this special broadcast. So why we're gathering on a Saturday is |
| 1:40.0 | we have a big unofficial national holiday tomorrow, which is the Super Bowl. And actually, just as I said |
| 1:47.0 | that, you guys know every year there's that phenomenon, right? That the day after the Super Bowl is the |
| 1:52.4 | day where a lot of people call in sick. We won't do that at Smarter News. Okay. We are going to be here |
| 1:58.6 | for you on Monday with our special scoop broadcast |
| 2:01.3 | with the news. But I'm watching you and I see you out there that may be thinking, you know, |
| 2:06.7 | Monday might be a good day to take off after the big game. But the Super Bowl is a special |
| 2:11.6 | cultural phenomenon in America. And it's an interesting one this year in particular. First of all, |
| 2:16.4 | there's the economic stimulus that you can never ignore wherever it is. So this year, it's in New Orleans. It's the 11th time that New Orleans is hosted a Super Bowl. And the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says that the initial estimates for the Super Bowl for the local economic impact is right around a half billion dollars. So $500 million just to New Orleans alone. |
| 2:37.3 | And think about the economic stimulus just because you may, I mean, again, no judgment. |
| 2:41.9 | You may. And I'll just confess, you know, I bought a couple extra big bags of potato chips because |
| 2:46.4 | you need those for the game, right? Those are little small economic choices that we're making that |
| 2:52.2 | actually fuel the broader economy. So there's the economic impact. There's the historic impact of it. |
| 2:57.8 | President Trump is expected to become the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, |
| 3:02.2 | which, by the way, kind of boggled my mind. I didn't realize that no presidents had attended, |
... |
