Out of the many disturbing and gruesome crime scene images in 15-year-old Karen Stitt's case file,

one photo stands out.

The picture shows a teenage Karen sitting near a blue and foamy ocean,

her smile just as warm and bright as the beach surroundings.

No longer with us today, the memory of Karen's sunny personalities frozen in time.

On September 1st, 1982, Karen was out with her boyfriend for the night, playing video games at the local 7-11.

Just after midnight, Karen's boyfriend realized he was past curfew, so he dropped Karen off at the bus stop on the busy El Camino Real,

a bus line she regularly traveled.

Tragically, she never made it home that night.

Alongside a busy road of Sunnyvale, California, Karen disappeared. It wasn't until the

Karen's body was thrown behind a wall of a restaurant, roughly 100 yards away from the bus stop.

She was found nude and bound with her own clothes. She had been raped and stabbed 59 times.

The violent and seemingly random nature of Karen's attack shocked the community of Sunnyvale.

For 40 years, Karen's brutal murder haunted the over 20 detectives who worked on her case

and the community at large.

For years, investigators poured over the case, interviewing friends, family, and others in the area.

However, no significant leads emerged within the case.
