| 0:30.1 | So since World War II, the United States |
| 0:32.3 | has adopted an expansive grand strategy where we not |
| 0:38.9 | only see it is in our interest to secure U.S. security, but also to ensure the peace and |
| 0:46.6 | stability of the world. One of the primary ways we do that is to have forward |
| 0:51.4 | deployed bases all over the world, especially in critical |
| 0:56.2 | choke points. |
| 0:57.2 | How many of these bases exist? |
| 0:59.3 | So we have about 800 military bases in about 70 or 80 countries abroad that amounts to about 270,000 |
| 1:08.4 | plus overseas troops at any given time. |
| 1:14.0 | And part of the idea here is to, |
| 1:17.3 | when we deter adversaries, like say, |
| 1:20.0 | our base in South Korea deters North Korea from causing any trouble. |
| 1:25.4 | Or our bases in Europe deters Russia from causing any trouble in Eastern Europe. |
| 1:32.2 | What we do is not only deter adversaries, but we reassure allies and therefore disincentivize |
| 1:38.7 | them from building up their own security capabilities. |
