In 1992, the United Nations formally recognized climate change as a significant international issue,

0:22.7

and one that would need to be addressed if peace and prosperity is to be furthered and maintained

0:28.4

around the world. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development took place that

0:34.3

same year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit was meant to be a place where UN member states could discuss how to cooperate in a post-Cold War era,

0:45.3

particularly on issues related to sustainability, which are too big for just one nation to handle,

0:51.8

as all nations contribute to the associated problems,

0:54.7

1:51.8

dangerous human interventions in the overall climate system should be avoided and prevented.

1:58.0

It was also determined that agreements would need to be made to catalyze future

2:02.6

collaborative effort on this bundle of subjects. So the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

2:09.5

was passed, putting those acknowledgments in writing and paving the way for future action in a non-legally

2:16.3

binding fashion. Basically, once the framework went into

2:20.3

effect, all it really did was set up semi-regular meetings for discussing these topics in the future,
