Hey Why It Matters listeners, the COP27 Climate Summit is in full swing in Charmel-Shake, Egypt.

This UN annual conference brings together nations from around the world to discuss what action can be taken to confront the climate crisis.

It's no secret that countries are not doing enough to reduce their carbon emissions.

And as emissions keep rising, that means the world's average temperature is also going to keep going up.

Scientists have warned that exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius in warming above

pre-industrial levels will lead to catastrophic climate disasters. Right now

COP27 is once again bringing the climate question into focus.

Nations are being asked to regroup and follow through on their pledges.

One issue that has dominated the conference is the fact that poorer countries who have

contributed least to global warming are being affected the most by consequences such

as extreme weather events and sea level rise.

Some advocate for wealthier countries

to compensate suffering countries for losses and damages.
