And the The early months of the year 44 B.C. are interesting to think about from our

vantage point now. Cleopatra is about 25 years old at this time and Caesar is about 55 years old turning 56 in a few months.

And their child together, Cessarian, is nearing three years old. And they're all in Rome together at this time

as this is toward the very tail end of Cleopatra's trip to Rome.

And as we said last episode, they were a family.

It might have not been a traditional family

the way we would recognize it today.

But nevertheless, they were a family in some form. And it's an interesting exercise to try and imagine what a normal day was like for them back then.

I mean, did Caesar ever sleep at his Grand Villa in bed with Cleopatra as opposed to his house near the floor? Is Did they have to encourage

Syrian to eat his food like all parents of young kids have to do at

meal time? Did Caesar wrestle around with

Syrian when his morning coffee or whatever he drank back then

started to kick in and like all little kids do with their parents shoes did

Cessarian try and put on his father's red boots and stomp around the house while

Caesar and Cleopatra looked on laughing. And yes, many sources say that

Caesar took to wearing calf-high red boots at this time,

similar again to the boots the ancient kings of Rome

were said to have worn.

And I only mention these pictures of domesticity

because this is the simple stuff that happens in. in these

larger than life pictures of domesticity, because this is the simple stuff that happens in families,

at least in my family.
