Well, last week on five minutes in church history, we were talking about Clement, and we did not get through his epistle to the Corinthian,

0:08.0

so I thought it would be good to go back and spend a little bit more time with Clement of Rome.

0:14.4

One of the things that's fascinating to me about this writing of Clement is that it was very

0:19.2

likely written either right alongside of the time John was writing his

0:25.0

apocalypse or the book of revelation or it was actually written before John wrote

0:29.9

revelation. Now what Clement wrote is not a canonical book. He did not write under the

0:35.1

inspiration of the Holy Spirit. But what we have here is a significant work. Not

0:40.4

only did Clement have associations with these early apostles,

0:44.0

very likely with Peter and Paul and with John,

0:47.0

but what we also see here is a writing that comes to us from the early church

0:52.0

either just as the canon of the New Testament

0:55.3

at how he talks about justification by faith alone, and we also looked at how he deals with

1:10.8

works once we have been justified. but in this episode I want to look at

1:15.6

chapter 37.

1:17.8

In this chapter, Clement tells us that Christ is our leader and we are his soldiers.

1:25.0

Now, let me just read to you what he happens to say,

1:29.0

and then we'll talk about it for a little bit.

1:31.0

Let us then, men and brethren, with all energy, act the part of

1:35.4

soldiers in accordance with his holy commandments. Let us consider those who serve under

1:41.2

our generals, with what order, obedience, and submissiveness, they
