Summary

At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists used 192 lasers to create a brief fusion reaction that put out more energy than it took to create it. This breakthrough — decades in the making — bodes well for future power plants that generate electricity without radioactive waste, or carbon-laden exhaust. President Biden's vision of a commercial fusion power plant in 10 years, however, faces significant obstacles — not the least of which is the view of the actual scientists that it will take several times that long to achieve. Scott Ott, Bill Whittle and Stephen Green have hosted multiple new episodes of a current events talk show weekly since 2009, thanks to our Members and donors. And for the first time in history, create a fusion reaction that generates more power than

it took to create it.

This is the breaking news out of the Department of Energy announced the day that we record this.

And gentlemen, I just want to talk to you about the implications of nuclear fusion in this particular kind of nuclear fusion,

0:35.1

which is referred to as inertial confinement fusion, not to be confused

0:38.8

with another kind that's related to magnetic forces.

0:42.7

In any case, I'm Scott out with Bill Whittle and Stephen Green, and this right angle is brought

to you by the members of Bill Whittle.com.

And men, it seems like such a small thing.

0:52.4

And in fact, the measurement of this fusion reaction

0:57.0

and the energy that came off of it, essentially two megajoules in,

1:03.0

three megajoules out.

1:05.0

So that was the measurement.

1:07.0

So they were trying to generate more energy than they put into it.

1:11.6

The time that this energy production lasted was measured, it was less than the time that light can travel one inch.

1:19.6

So this is, I heard somebody on the news refer to it as a, as the blink of an eye.

1:28.5

I'm like, no, no, no, no, no.

1:29.5

Nobody blinks their eye that fast.

1:31.6

So in any case, they have managed to create a little ignition event here that generated energy beyond what was put into it.

1:41.8

And the announcement came from Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, and then several other
