Summary

So you made, have, or are looking into getting a self-bow, recurve bow or similar. But how do you shoot the dang thing? Good question – and good thing we have Clay Hayes of Season 8 of History Channel’s hit show “Alone”, where participants test their mental toughness, physical toughness, and bushcraft in a crazy competition of survival and attrition – to explain it to us. Clay is not only a master of making bows out of trees he fells, splits, dries and crafts into art-like arrow-sending implements, he’s a master of shooting them as well. Follow along as Mark and Jim pick his larger than average brain in an effort to fast track their shooting prowess.

lands, the Second Amendment, and good food.

All right everybody, we are back now with Clay still, he's still with us, so that's

0:23.9

a good sign.

0:24.9

Mark and I haven't completely driven him mad yet, but in actually Mark and I get to show

0:29.1

off our bows if you're watching on video right now, we have them here, they've dried from

0:33.7

their spar urethane treatment, we've given them a couple of coatings, we'll probably

0:36.9

end up giving them more when we get back home, but this is kind of how they've turned

0:40.8

out, and Clay has been helping us attempting to help us learn how to shoot these things.

0:48.2

Because there's just a lot of unique little oddities and quirks to shooting a traditional

0:52.8

bow and doing it well, and I think it's one of those things that nobody can really ever

0:58.4

say that they've perfectly mastered, like many things on earth, at least hopefully I

1:02.2

would make me feel a little bit better if that were the case, but what's the fun and completely

1:06.4

mastering it, Jim?

1:07.4

That's right, that's right, then the challenge is going to get to find something else,

1:10.8

but the challenge I would say certainly is not gone even for Clay, because we've gone

1:15.7

out and we were stump shooting a lot today, we were tuning bows, that's something we got

1:20.4

to talk about today, we did a little stump shooting, we'll explain what that is, and a lot

1:24.5

of learning along the way about form, and even just the arrows themselves, all kinds

1:29.3

of stuff, and also maybe how we would wind up using them in a hunting setting, Clay's explained

1:34.5

a lot of that, because he's used these bows and tons of different hunts, and so yeah, Clay,

1:40.5

maybe I guess where we'd start here, what is unique to shooting a traditional bow versus
