Summary

Friends, there’s only one real sadness in life—not to be a saint. But what does it mean to follow this path of righteousness? To follow the will of God, and God wills that we habitually direct our actions and thoughts to the good of others. Jesus says blessed are the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure in heart. Following Christ’s Sermon on the Mount leads to our beatitude; living in this way leads to sainthood.

warmth and light of Christ with each one of us. Peace be with you. Friends, this

opportunity to reflect on this wonderful feast day and more particularly on what

0:49.6

it means to be a saint. You know, one of the advantages of All Saints Day is that

0:55.3

it emphasizes the universality of the call to sanctity. You know, if you

1:01.6

isolate a given saint, you know, Saint Francis of Assisi or Thomas Aquinas,

1:05.2

they can seem so egregious. Like, there's no way I could ever be like that. But

1:10.4

All Saints Day emphasizes yes, the canonized, officially recognized saints, but

1:16.2

also all the ordinary people that we have forgotten about in history, whom God

1:21.3

is remembered as saintly. So it reminds us that being a saint is the ordinary

1:28.9

goal of the Christian life. Let me say that again, being a saint, it's not

1:34.8

exceptionally egregious, it's the ordinary goal of the Christian life. Everything in

1:40.3

the church, I mean preaching, I mean the scripture, I mean the sacraments, I mean the

1:43.5

Eucharist, I mean everything in the church is meant to conduce to the place where

1:48.8

we become saints, we become holy. I've quoted before, it's one of my favorite

1:54.5

quotes from Leuon Bluat, the French spiritual writer. There's only one real sadness in life,
