Summary

Friends, the mountain is a great image throughout the Bible. It is the place where we go up and where God comes down to meet us. Today’s first reading from Isaiah orients us to three holy mountains of the Lord: first, the historical Mount Zion; second, its fulfillment in the heavenly Mount Zion; and third, a sort of “middle mountain” of the Mass, where we raise our minds and hearts to God, who comes to gather us, to speak his word, and to feed us.

0:40.4	is it about mountains? It's just so compelling to us. Now maybe it's because I'm
0:44.7	from Chicago where everything is flat but whenever I've seen mountains I'm
0:49.2	just drawn to them. Remember the very first time I went to Seattle and I saw
0:54.9	Mount Reneer which is not out as they say all the time. It's often covered in
0:59.1	clouds but it was brilliantly visible that day. I don't know. I was just sort of
1:04.0	in an ecstasy looking at this mountain. Whenever I'm in a plane going over
1:09.2	mountain I'm always drawn even from that great height to look at them. Here in
1:13.9	Santa Barbara where I'm privileged to live we have the sea on one side and
1:17.5	mountains on the other and so whenever I can't I look at them and I'm sort of
1:22.5	drawn into a mystical state. Well of course it's a great image throughout the
1:29.2	Bible isn't it? The mountain where we go up and where God comes down to meet us
1:35.4	it's sort of a tristing place if you want between divinity and humanity. Well in
1:40.4	the prophet Isaiah and again we're reading from Isaiah in our first reading the
1:44.8	image of God's holy mountain comes up a lot. One of my favorite passages in the
