In this episode, I'm going to tell you the story of the early submarines, including the

Hunley, and I'm also going to tell you about how hot air balloons were used during the

Civil War.

It's absolutely fascinating and stories like this really help us to add to our picture

of the events of the Civil War.

When you hear the word submarine, you may think about the massive,

modern, underwater ships built today.

But the submarines you're going to hear about in this episode are nothing like those ships.

Let me start at the beginning and set the backdrop for our story.
