A national citizen database is being built for U.S. elections, and part of this effort includes a controversial system that documents American citizens.

The toolwork is a searchable database that can be used by election officials to verify that only citizens are voting.

And in other news, the FBI announced the takedown of a fraud ring that was stealing

hundreds of millions from the U.S. health care system. This is the largest bust of this type in DOJ

Now, as we speak, there's a push to have citizenship verification for elections in the United States.

And part of this effort, a very big effort, includes a controversial system that documents American citizens. Because how do you tell if someone's

a citizen or not at the local level? You got to check it. To do that, you have to have a database.

Now, this tool is going to work as a searchable database that can be used by election officials,

but it's also raising concerns over, well, are they documenting Americans like that?

NPR said this. It said the Trump administration, as for the first time ever,

built a searchable national citizenship data system. The tool which is being rolled out in

phases is designed to be used by state and local election officials to give them an easier way to ensure only citizens are voting.

But they add it was developed rapidly without a public process, and some of those officials are already worrying about what else it could be used for.

They note NPR is the first news organization to report the details of the new system.

There were a lot of questions over what they were doing.
