Summary

On December 31, 1975, 45-year-old Charlie Roberson and his 41-year-old wife, Carol, had just returned to their Greenwood Indiana home from running errands.

By 10.30pm, Carol had already fallen into a deep sleep. Suddenly, their 18-year-old live-in nanny, Cindy White, began to pound on the door screaming for them to wake up.

Cindy pushed open the door and saw Charlie was awake and sitting on the edge of the bed. She ran to Carol and shook her awake yelling that there was a fire in the house.

Charlie ran into the living room and tried to put out the flames that had spread all around the room. The fire was rapidly moving to other parts of the house and Carol and Cindy moved quickly toward the rooms of the couple's four children.

Carol ordered Cindy to call the fire department while she rushed toward the children. Cindy stumbled through the smoke-filled hallway to get to the kitchen.

When she finally got the operator on the phone, all she could do was scream, fire!

Unable to talk in the unbearable heat and choking on the smoke, she hung up the handset and rushed back to help rescue the children.

While Carol went back to get the younger children, Cindy took the oldest six- and seven-year-old boys to the nearest bedroom and tried to open the storm window. But it was stuck.

There was a smaller glass window above it, but she had to let go of the children's hands in order to climb up and reach it.

After hitting the upper window with her fists several times, she finally managed to break the small glass pane and then everything went black.

The oxygen coming from the open window fed the fire and created a backdraft.

The explosion propelled Cindy out the window and onto the snow-covered ground.

By this point, neighbors had gathered around the house and some of them rushed to help Cindy, who was momentarily knocked unconscious by the explosion.

She quickly recovered and tried running back into the house, screaming, where are the kids? Where are my kids?

The neighbors held her back while taking care not to hurt her scorched limbs and face. When the firemen arrived, she broke free and ran to the front door of the house.

When she grabbed the knob, it burned her hands so badly she screamed and instinctively let go.

A firefighter got to her before she tried again and pulled her off the porch.

The firemen would later describe the blackened surface of her hands and face as, quote, pure charcoal.

Finally, an ambulance arrived and Cindy was loaded into it. As she screamed about the kids and sobbed, they restrained her on a gurney and put an oxygen mask on her face.

Cindy continued to fight against the restraints, hysterically crying and asking over and over, did they get out? Did they get out?
