In Edgar Allan Poe's haunting short story, The Cask of Amontiado, a man named Montresor,

nurses a quiet hatred against his so-called friend, Fortunato.

Insult after friendly insult piles up, slights that Fortunato never even realizes he is committing.

Montresor never confronts Fortunato. He never warns him that the insults have gone too far.

Instead, he waits. And then when he has had enough, Montresor invites Fortunato to the catacombs

to taste a rare wine, the Amontagado. As they descend deeper into the catacombs,

Fortunato, aptly dressed as a jester, gets more and more drunk. Before he realizes it,

Mantrasor chains him to a wall. At first, Fortunato thinks it's a joke, some dark joke between

friends. But it is not a joke. Brick by brick, Montresor seals his friend

behind a wall of mortar, essentially burying him alive. A lifetime of simmering resentment, ending in a sudden, brutal act of violence.

In 2013, Christopher Dorner would follow a path just as dark.

A former LAPD officer, Dorner believed he had been wrongfully fired, humiliated, betrayed,

and abandoned by the system he trusted.

But instead of letting go, Dorner let his anger fester.

For five years, the grudge grew.
