Summary

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Regulars to the pod might be familiar with the story of Christian Meier the cyclist, the teammate, or the Girona resident and coffee shop owner. But, inspired by organising my first running event - the ‘Pub to Pub’ in Lancefield, this instalment Life in the Peloton is all aboutChristian Meier: the ultra-runner. After retiring in 2016 and setting up his Girona coffee shops, Christian hasn’t sat still, and instead has found a new athletic passion that has led him to some quite incredible heights! For most ex-pros finishing their career means they wind down and gradually do less sport (or none at all). Christian has broken that mould and found a new love for Ultra-running that in his mind eclipses even his feats as a professional cyclist riding the Tour de France, Giro of Vuelta. I’ve been loving getting involved with running since I stopped racing, even starting up the Lanny Run Club here in Lancefield. Interestingly in the past few years, we’ve seen more and more professional cyclists turn to running as part of their training and fitness regimen, even during the race season, something that was unthinkable for a pro rider just a few years ago. Christian was a fascinating guy to talk to on the subject (I ran out of time to get all the tips out of him that I wanted!) but I did get to ask him about what it was like making the transition, what he loves about ultra-running and the similarities and surprising differences between the two endurance sports. We also went over his incredible win in the TDS, an ultra-running race of 145km that takes in over 9000m of climbing in the Alps. I’ll leave you guys to have a listen to hear what the man himself has to say about that! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- The Dirty Docker is almost here! Dirty Docker is my multi-day event for all things cycling and running in the Macedon Ranges. Well, good-a-y guys and welcome to the podcast. I'm Mitch Docker. This is Life in the Peloton, presented by MAP. And yep, there's a lot going on right now. We're on the

0:24.1

eve of the second equinox. Sunday, the 22nd of September marks the second equinox of the year,

0:32.0

a brief moment of balance where we all experience 12 hours of light and darkness in both hemispheres.

0:39.5

And the idea is, MAP have got this great idea, 12 hours chasing the light, more than 50

0:46.3

global rides around the world celebrating a moment of euphoric equilibrium. It's cool. It's a really cool idea and I'm on the eve of my ride,

0:57.1

which is going to take place this set day from Melbourne all the way up to Lake Hume some 330

1:02.6

kilometers later. The idea is we want to be on the road for 12 hours to experience that equinox.

1:09.7

I don't know if I'm ready. But there's been a lot of other stuff

1:13.3

going on and that is what is going on in this episode. Life in the Peloton just ran our very

1:20.3

first event, the pub to pub run. Yep, that was just out of my hometown here, Landsfield. The idea was running from the Lancefield pub up to the Romsey Pub and back,

1:31.2

or you could go from the Romsey Pub down to the Lancefield Pub. There's a cool track in

1:35.6

between. It was all about running. It was all about community. We had some 330 people

1:41.1

turn out to do the inaugural pub to pub run. Of course, there was a few cold beers drunk at the end.

1:47.6

The trophy was a pot glass with a pub to pub logo on the front. Well, if you weren't there,

1:54.7

you didn't get to get one and they're going to be a running theme for the years to come.

1:58.6

It was really fun and it was a bit hectic, but I had a lot of

2:01.7

fun hosting the event. But that is what leads us into this week's episode, running. And you're probably thinking, hey, hang on a second here. This is Life and the Perns on. What are we talking about? Well, you probably know that I've been getting into my running in the last couple of years because I just don't have time, really, and running is the bang for your buck. But then I caught the bug. I've been out running the trails here in the infamous Coborsum, the Cobor Forest. There is hundreds of kilometres, well, it feels like there's a lot of kilometres of trail up there. Plus, I run around Lanswood in the Lennie Run Club, something that started up this year.

2:35.9

It's such a cool thing. I'm really loving the crossover from cycling.

2:39.9

And I thought, well, I know someone who's done the crossover much better than me.

2:45.2

A guy you are all familiar with, I'm sure, Christian Meyer.

2:49.4

I caught up with Christian Meyer to understand his transition from pro cyclists to pro

2:55.5

trail runner.
