In our last episode, we discussed Chris Smith's breakthrough documentary American movie, which premiered at Sundance exactly 20 years ago.

Now Smith has a much-talked-about new documentary on Netflix called Fire, about the Fire

Festival debacle in its aftermath.

What was Fire Festival, you might ask?

Well, Fire Festival was a two-weekend music event that was intended as a promotion to support

the Fire Media app, which build itself as an

Uber for event bookings.

God, I guess they still do call things Uber for whatever.

Fire founder, Billy McFarlane, his partner, Jarlane, originally planned to throw the event

on Pablo Escobar's private island in the Bahamas, where attendees would stay in luxury

villas, eat gourmet

food, and party on the beach while bands like Major Laser, Blink 182, and Migos performed.

To promote the festival, they made a promotional video in Paradise with supermodels like

Mel Hadid and Emily Radikowski and flooded social media with messages from high-profile influencers.

The events sold out quickly, but McFarlane and company gravely underestimated how
