This story just came out today.

A lengthy cruise, including stops as remote as Antarctica,

has turned into the scene of a deadly disease probe.

Cool.

Three people have passed on.

Three others are ill of suspected hantavirus infections.

Linked to the Hondias, a Netherlands-operated expedition ship,

now anchored off the African country of Cape Verde.

I'm sure Cape Verde is like, maybe move that somewhere else, man.

They put the three that are infected into the hospital ward of the ship or the room they have or whatever.

One passenger's infection has been confirmed.

Five more cases are suspected. Two of the dead are a Dutch couple in their late 60s and 70s who fell ill during the voyage that began in Argentina and wound through Antarctica and several South Atlantic Islands.

Now, details in the third death have not been released, but a British passenger who tested positive and is the only confirmed case so far is being treated now in South Africa at a hospital there, where authorities say one patient is in intensive care.

Two crew members do remain on board.

Cape Verdi officials have so far refused to let the boat disembark and medical evacuation is being arranged.

This stuff is typically spread by contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine

or saliva.

They rarely pass between people but can cause severe lung or kidney diseases.

There's no specific treatment or cure, by getting medical care early increases survival odds.

This is the same thing that killed Gene Hackman's wife in New Mexico, I believe.

She got the infection and died about a week later.

I believe they say this comes from the deer mouse.
