Summary

Grant has a fun talk about soccer and other things with Chris Jones (at 26:18), the two-time National Magazine Award-winning writer who also covers the sport for ESPN. They discuss Jones playing soccer and coaching his sons, his favorite soccer stories from over the years, whether his beloved Canadian men's national team can finally make a World Cup again, his transition from magazine writing to screenwriting and his viral Friday Twitter story threads about everything from Ricky Williams to Carrot Top. Before that, Grant breaks down the soccer weekend with Chris Wittyngham, including the U.S. men's Olympic team getting six points in its first two group games, this week's senior USMNT games and whether UEFA should do anything to seed the Champions League quarterfinal draw. Hey there. Welcome to Food Ball with Grant Wall. Thanks so much for joining me. Today's

0:12.0

interview guest is Chris Jones, the two-time national magazine award-winning writer who

0:18.6

writes about soccer for ESPN. We've had some great guests lately including Sarah Spain,

0:25.2

Jason, Christ, and Ian Joy. I also encourage you to check out my podcast series, American

0:31.6

Prodigy, the Freddie Edoe Story, all eight episodes are out and you can binge all of them to

0:38.7

your heart's content. We'll have Chris Jones on soon here, but let's start with some talk about

0:45.2

the soccer world with my friend Chris Wittingham, the radio voice of Inter Miami and a co-host of

0:51.7

the Chelsea miced-up podcast. Chris, thanks for joining me. How are you? Doing all right, Sarah?

0:57.6

How are you? Doing all right. We've had a pretty good weekend of soccer here, maybe better than

1:03.5

expected, even. And a few things to talk about before we get to my interview with Chris Jones,

but I do want to lead with US men's Olympic qualifying. We're recording this on Sunday at about

1:22.5

5.20 p.m. Eastern. So this is before the US takes on the Dominican Republic. I'm going to take

1:31.6

a risk here and assume that the US is going to get three points out of this game. If that does not

1:37.2

happen, we'll get back together later and re-record after the game, but assuming the US is on six

1:45.7

points after two games, regardless of how they played against Costa Rica, that was a big game to

1:54.1

get three points. Without question, and I do think the how is somewhat important, and in an

1:59.5

episode in which we will later talking about reform in terms of how this how schedules and done

2:05.2

and how competitions are formatted. We'll get to that in a second. I do think you see the very

2:10.0

obvious disadvantage sometimes that the MLS calendar has on Americans in international competition,

2:16.8

whether it is at international level or at domestic level, when it comes to Conky-Caf Champions League,

2:22.4

you're playing Costa Rican team that's in full swing in their season. They've got a couple of

2:26.2

MLS players. I think we're influential on the day, but they just had more in their legs. And so
