I've never wanted to be somewhere more than I did the day after the Doring party at the Spurrier grill. Yeah, he's the he's the emcee of the roast there. Chris Doring joins us now. SEC Network and ESPN Florida Gator Great. I've got to be honest, it's no shot at you, Chris. You know this, but I had no idea that Steve Spurrier Awards existed until this year. Boy, did it ever get announced with a bang

for those of us that didn't know it existed? Yeah, one, I think we did a terrible job, obviously,

of getting the word out, but two, I don't think we could have paid for the publicity that we got

after the, like you guys said, roast occurred, and it was not supposed to be a roast. This is not

the format of the banquet typically in the previous four.

This was the fifth annual.

And I guess the mix was kind of perfect with the relationship that Mario Cristobal and Kirby

Smart had dating back to their days there in Tuscaloosa.

But it was actually a different coach that actually got the roasting going.

It was former Gator and Tennessee coach and Tennessee athletic director Doug Dickie that kind of got the ribbing started. When I asked him, I said, hey, coach, what was it that you saw in Coach Spurrier when you decided to hire him that you thought would be beneficial to your program? He said absolutely nothing. This guy who was hanging around playing golf,

we brought him in and got fired the next year. He gets another job. They get fired in their first

year, finally finds his way to Duke and gets things going there. But it was tough to live up to

everybody that came up, you know, had the bar set higher for them. So I almost felt bad for Coach Fulmer and for Coach Mullet who had to go after the back

and forth between Mario and Kirby.

Was there, C.D., was there anything uncomfortable for you just because you said typically

it doesn't go in that direction? And from our standpoint, we only saw clips that were put

together by our guys here. And it was incredible entertainment for us, but were there moments of

uncomfortable? I would say the uncomfortability came in. Coach Berger is one of the guys that

like to give it, but doesn't necessarily take it quite as well. So as Coach Dickie was saying some of these things, I'm looking back at Coach for his reaction. He seemed to take it pretty well. I think that speaks to the respect that he has first coach Dickie. But, man, Coach Summerall, the new Florida Gator coach was in attendance there. Love that he was out and hoping maybe he'll have a chance to win the award next year as the first year coach of the year winner. But Kirby looks over at him and goes, hey, I don't know what you're laughing at, John. There's been four Gator coaches in my time in Athens. So Coach Spurrier, your daughter's a good realtor? She's done well with all the Cummins and going to these coaches since I've been at Georgia. Wow.

Yeah, that did feel awkward.

I remember that one.

And, C.D., I don't guess I ever knew what you did when you weren't setting beside Peter Burns.
