Summary

Romans 9:30-33 — The sovereignty of God in salvation pushes towards humility in a couple of ways. The most obvious is the pride-bursting truth that salvation is completely and totally the work of God’s grace for which no one can take any credit. Second is the reality that people will never understand why God ordains some and not others. It is a profound mystery and all must humble themselves to accept that they will not understand the inscrutable mind of God on the topic. In this sermon on Romans 9:30–33 titled “Choice, not Belief,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones pushes back against those who want to hold onto some level of credit for their own salvation and he presses his own imagined interlocutors in order to show them the futility of their position. He maintains that it is not belief or faith that causes salvation but God’s choice. Listen as he tackles an important but difficult topic in a manner worthy of imitation.

behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whosoever believeth

on him shall not be ashamed.

Now, this is the conclusion, as we saw last Friday night, to the argument of the whole of this great chapter.

The Apostle says, well now then, what is the position?

And in verses 30 and 31, he just puts the fact before us.

And the fact is a remarkable and an astonishing one.

1:10.0

That looking at the Christian church this is

1:13.0

what was to be seen, that the Gentiles who never gave a thought of being right with God

1:19.3

and were not concerned about righteousness have eagerly grasped the offer of righteousness

1:26.3

in Christ which was made to them by the preaching of the gospel and are to be found in the Christian Church.

Whereas Israel, whose main concern in life in many respects, was to attain into this righteousness,

1:41.0

and who thought that they could do so by giving an obedience to the law given through Moses

1:47.1

have not attained into it, have not arrived at it, and are outside the Christian church.
