It will be very interesting to compare their tenures side by side to kind of figure out how

much is this administration overall versus a particular secretary.

On the one hand, Pompeo's reportedly much better relationship with the president will

be an advantage overall for the department.

On the other hand, I think one of the critical roles of the department is precisely in

contributing a unique perspective in an agency discussions that is deeply informed by

regional knowledge, by understandings of international law institutions framework.

You know, I only hope that in switching hats, Mike Pompeo will also sort of internalize

his role as the champion of a department that has certain equities in working with our

partners, fostering alliances to really leverage the tremendous capabilities that we have

and not to by being in the department sort of substitute views of other agencies for

the views of the State Department.
