So this is a story that unfortunately has been in the ether for far too long now.

Coincidentally I pitched it to the editor of assignment pretty much on the same day that the BBC's producer in

Chile, Jane Chambers, did too. So in the end we join forces to report on the scandal

of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and Jane's excellent

local knowledge and contacts were invaluable for us. Sexual abuse stories are

always upsetting to listen to, but I hope you'll stay with us and if you're engaged and

James Hamilton, a surgeon now in his 50s, is talking about the Catholic

priest who became the most notorious sexual predator in Chile, a nation once

amongst the most devout in Latin America.

He tried to show you the figure or the face of Christ.

For a young person, it was absolutely like the bee and the honey, you know. It was sweet in a world that you

lived difficulties and struggles in your family.

Father Fernando Karadima began sexually abusing a teenage James Hamilton in the early 1980s.

In spite of multiple complaints from multiple survivors, Karadima wasn't condemned by the Vatican

until 2011 when he was sentenced to a life of penance and prayer.

But this was no one-off rogue cleric. I'm Linda Presley and in

this week's assignment the scandal that's dogged the Catholic Church in

Chile and that haunts the France's papacy.
