Summary

This week, Kate gets vulnerable and discusses what no one wants from a childless millennial: opinions about the prospect of parenting, pregnancy, and motherhood. Rather than provide anything conclusive, she opts for a stream-of-consciousness approach about being at an age where decisions need to be made, feeling ill-equipped to make those decisions, and the implications of social media #momlife on her perceptions of motherhood. She also explores the impossible paradox of being at your career's height amidst your fertility's alleged decline and has an honest discussion about her fears for herself and her own mental health. After discussing this briefly on Instagram, Kate received hundreds of DMs from women at all different phases of their lives who inspired her to do this episode. The point is not to provide an unwanted opinion, but to allow women at any stage of this incredibly important life transition to be allowed to have a voice. At the end, she reads through her DMs to share the meaningful input people wrote to her that helped her feel better by showing a more realistic depiction of parenting outside of the harrowing hashtags. She understands this topic is sensitive, deeply personal, and easily spoken about incorrectly. But more important than being right, she wants you all to feel alright, and figured the first step toward overcoming this anxiety is to talk about it. Enjoy!

Hi everybody, welcome back to the Be There In Five podcast. I'm Kate Kennedy, your host.

0:11.7

I'm a 33 year old Chicago based childless millennial who is an entrepreneur, author, pop culture

0:18.1

commentator and a podcast host. Now podcasting is my main gig, which I did not see coming

0:23.2

when I started this almost three years ago. But I'm grateful for the privilege of your

0:28.2

company. This podcast is long form by design. It is tangential and long winded and single,

0:35.8

singularly hosted by me by design. And I know it's a format that takes some getting used to, but

0:41.0

I've come to learn I'm the official podcast of like people training for marathons,

0:45.1

of people like doing yard work, enduring some light manual labor, you know, going on a long road

0:50.2

trip, watching, you know, paint dry grass grow. If it's long and menial, I will invite myself to

0:58.2

come along with you. And I'm greatly appreciative of your company. Sometimes I reintroduce myself,

1:05.4

I never really know how many new people are here. And if I were new and I were you, I'd be

1:11.6

pretty confused by this person. It's just going to launch into this topic. But you know, we can

1:18.2

always plan the things we want to discuss. And I think what's been really cool for me is

1:23.8

in being an independent podcaster and having the ability to be nimble with the timing that I put

1:28.5

out episodes and having control over the topics, I can kind of react to things that are, you know,

1:34.4

happening in real time. Like last week, my episode about that stemmed just from a really rude email

1:40.8

I had gotten from a condescending male in the industry. Or this week, which is stemming from a kind

1:47.2

of unforeseen Instagram conversation I've been having with a lot of you that made me realize maybe

1:52.0

there is a space for this after all. But I want to start by giving a disclaimer and even a trigger

1:59.8

warning for some. I'm going to talk about a lot of different things in the sphere of marriage,

2:06.8

of parenthood, of having kids, of pregnancy, of a bunch of things that outside of being married.

2:13.4

I don't have firsthand experience in and I don't really have a place to tell you how to feel about
