First, we dip into the archive for a story from Jesse Dukes.

In the 50s and 60s, thousands of white Southerners came to Chicago in search of jobs and a better life,

and most of them ended up in Uptown.

It sounds terrible now, but they still call it that, you know, they used to call Uptown Hill-Billy Heaven.

Then we'll look at the Great Migration when hundreds of thousands of black

southerners moved to Chicago, and white homeowners had a powerful, completely legal tool to

keep black people out of their neighborhoods.

It would say phrases like, no part of said premises shall be conveyed least or sold to any

Negro or Negroes.
