Hey everyone, thanks for turning into The Alarmist, a comedy podcast where we take history's greatest

disasters and tragedies and figure out who's to blame. Today we'll be discussing the

Chernobyl nuclear meltdown. Let's get started.

The Chernobyl power plant was a nuclear power plant in the former USSR located in northern Ukraine.

It was responsible for 10% of Ukraine's electricity at the time of the disaster.

On the early morning of April 1986 an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plants

reactor number four caused the worst nuclear disaster in history. The explosion and subsequent fire resulted in large

quantities of radioactive iodine and Cessium being released into the air. the toxic cloud reached neighboring Belarus and parts of Russia and Europe.

The nearby town of Pripyat, built to house workers at Chernobyl, went from a population of almost 50,000 people before the accident

to zero, making it an atomic ghost town.
