explosion at a nuclear power plant near the city of Cripyat in what's known today as Ukraine.

The explosion led to a number of fires that let loose a massive amount of radioactive debris into the air and surrounding environment, requiring a total evacuation of the city.

Nowadays, Pripyat and the surrounding 19-mile radius are practically a ghost town
